Why Are Cat Urine Stains So Hard To Remove From Carpets: Carpet Cleaning Castle Rock

Lets face it, we all love our cats. They're mystic creatures that fascinate us. Sometimes it's seems they're a bit stand offish but once you have that relationship with them it's pretty remarkable.

But what's remarkable in a not so good way is they're urine. Anyone whose has ever had a cat will tell you cleaning cat urine in carpet seems impossible at times. The question is why is cat urine so hard to remove from carpets. Well our friends at TLC Carpet Care in Castle Rock are cat owners as well and they're going to share a little info that will help us understand cat urine and how we can more effectively clean and remove those stains.

First let's take a look at the chemical makeup of cat urine. Cat urine is made up of primarily water, urea, uric acid, creatine and salts. So when a cat deposits urine on a carpet urine that comes out is an acid, but it doesn't stay that way. As cat urine starts to dry the acid ph transforms to an alkaline because bacteria is beginning to develop. The alkaline forms salt crystals and those crystals have a chemical reaction to your carpet which is why cat urine always turns yellow. The reaction can have the same effect of rug fibers, wool as well as any synthetic fibers.

Ok so what does this tell you. Your dealing with a two fold problem. 1) The bacteria will eventually create ammonia gases in the air that will be pungent and very unpleasant to smell. To remove the odor you will need some type of enzymatic cleaner that will digest and breakdown the bacteria, or else it can become a health issues if you end up with a lot of cat urine in your carpets. 2) The yellowing of the carpets. You now have a stain as you may already know that is not easily removable. The problem is the alkaline level in the cats urine and it's ph. You will need a time released acidity that will reverse the ph back to a neutral or slightly acidic ph level.

What to use? Unfortunately you will not find many carpet cleaning products in the store that will help. The companies that make these products sadly enough don't even have a fundamental knowledge of carpet cleaning 101. You can try some home remedies that you can make like vinegar and water for the stain and baking soda to draw out the odor. You may have some success with that if you dont have a major urine problem.
