Many spills if left go without soaking up can develop mold spores that can actually cause musty smells. For musty smells from mold spores, you can use a home remedy that is cheap and really effective. See if you have some white vinegar in your pantry and then try diluting one portion of white vinegar with one equal portion of cold water and mix it in a spray bottle. Spray the specific area on your carpet, and the area in which the musty smell is coming from. Be careful not to saturate the carpet but to leave it slightly damp.
Fair warning vinegar is not pleasant to smell, but its much better than musty odors and the vinegar will go away in a day or so. If the musty odor is still lingering after 48 hours repeat the process until the musty odor is gone. Once it is gone be sure to vacuum the carpet.
It may be tempting to soak the carpet but doing so may contribute to the breeding of new mold spores instead of eliminating them. Instead, only lightly spray the carpet with the diluted vinegar solution, and wait for it to dry completely. You can place a fan on the area to quicken the dry time as well.
