Wicking occurs when water used to clean the carpet takes to long to dry and then the PH level of the carpet begins to be to high. This improper ph balance can leave the carpet with a brown haze that can be seen on the very surface of the carpets. 

Wicking can also occur when a spill or pet accident saturates the surface of the carpet, this liquid can also penetrate from the carpet fibers into the backing and spreading deep into the backing of the latex an in some cases the padding and subfloor. This can also cause old carpet stains to reappear.
