When you have a spill on your carpet when it first happens or a stain resist the urge to immediately start scrubbing. Scrubbing can do damage to the carpet fibers especially if it is a natural finer like wool. Scrubbing also will only push the contents of the spill deeper into the carpet. Instead, gently dab stains with a dye free towel and a cleaning solution or you can use a paper towel, or sponge.

The technique you want is to gently blot. Blotting puts a small amount of pressure on the stain, so you can soak it up slowly without making it deeper and wised. Scrubbing causes the particles to get ground into the fibers, which can lead to the premature breakdown of those fibers and it can also cause oxidation which will lead to a permanent stain. 

And always blot from the outer edge of the stain inward toward the center; blotting outward can spread the stain further across the carpet making a bigger stain and eye soar.
